The Accident In August 1970, shortly after the end of filming what would become her final film, Spanish star Soledad Miranda and her spouse José Manuel Simões, along with their three-year-old son Tony, took a short holiday in Lisbon, Portugal to visit Simões's parents. Soledad was coming off a busy year of filming with legendary director Jess Franco. With Tony safely watched by his grandmother in Cascais, on the morning of August 18, Soledad and José Manuel were driving in their Simca along the Costa del Sol highway between Estoril and Lisbon, Portugal. Reportedly, she was headed to a meeting with Franco in order to sign a film contract which would make her a major star in Europe. José Manuel, a former professional racecar driver, was behind the wheel. They were rounding a curve in front of the Hotel Estoril-Sol (which no longer exists) when they had a collision with a small truck which crushed their car. José Manuel had broken bones that required surgery. Soledad received serious fractures to her skull and spine. Rushed by ambulance to the Hospital of San José in Lisbon, Soledad never came out of her coma. She died that afternoon, hours after the accident, at the age of twenty-seven.

The Funeral Soledad's funeral was on the morning of August 21 at the Church of Campo Grande in Lisbon. It was attended mostly by artists of Portuguese cinema and some Spanish expatriates who lived in Lisbon. José Manuel was still hospitalized and unable to attend. Her family was back in Spain and was also unable to attend. A mass occurred in Sevilla for her family and those close to her, on the evening of August 23 at the Church of San Gonzalo in Triana, where her parents had married and Soledad had been christened.
El funeral de Soledad se celebró la mañana del 21 de agosto en la Iglesia de Campo Grande de Lisboa. Asistieron principalmente artistas del cine portugués y algunos españoles residentes en Lisboa. José Manuel seguía hospitalizado y no pudo asistir. Su familia, que se encontraba en España, tampoco pudo asistir. La tarde del 23 de agosto se celebró una misa en Sevilla para su familia y allegados en la Iglesia de San Gonzalo de Triana, donde se casaron sus padres y fue bautizada Soledad.
The Cemetery
After the funeral, Soledad’s body was taken to the municipal cemetery, Cementério do Lumiar in Lisbon, where she was interred and remains to this day. At the time, political tensions were high between Portugal and Spain, and her parents and siblings were unable to visit the cemetery to make complete arrangements. They sent money and thought Soledad's name had been placed at her grave, but it never was, so for nearly 55 years her grave was marked only with a number (6438). This was a source of disappointment, even ire, to many loyal fans who visited the cemetery, to find that such an iconic actress had an anonymous grave. I was often asked about it. The surviving family never knew the grave was anonymous until 2015, after I visited and photographed the grave during filming of a Soledad Miranda documentary. After I advised the family of that fact, and after they saw my photos, they began a tedious process of having her name added. For some reason, it took 10 years. Finally, in 2025, I received information that was incredible and momentous. Soledad's sister notified me that the grave no longer was anonymous. Almost simultaneously, a fan had visited her grave and sent me the photos of the nameplate on Soledad's ossuary. Her sister asked me not to share photos on social media and to let Soledad "rest in peace." You see, Soledad's siblings are religious and of the mindset that Soledad's soul will only rest if it is left alone. They have a love/hate relationship with the fact that Soledad is famous, which was in fact Soledad's ultimate goal (international fame, as she stated in multiple interviews). Out of respect for her sister's wishes, I did not post these on social media. However, as a duty to Soledad's fans all over the world (particularly those who cannot visit Portugal in person), and to share this important news, I created this page of the website.
Tras el funeral, el cuerpo de Soledad fue trasladado al cementerio municipal, Cementerio do Lumiar, en Lisboa, donde fue enterrada y permanece hasta hoy. Dado la alta tensión política entre Portugal y España en aquel entonces, sus padres y hermanos no pudieron visitar el cementerio para completar los preparativos. The Final Resting Place
Soledad’s ossuary is on the bottom row of a long wall several tombs high. The engraved number, 6438, is still present. However, it is now joined by a nameplate and a beautiful small photo of Soledad (oddly, a promotional photo from one of her Franco films). The nameplate has her real name (Soledad Rendón Bueno), the dates of her life, and the inscription (in Spanish) "from your Rendón Bueno family who love you".
